What is the best product for wavy hair?

Looking for your new go-to? Read this...

If you could only buy one product for wavy hair, what should it be?

It's a difficult question.

Wavy hair needs moisture, definition and hold, but it's also incredibly easy to weigh down. That's why the best results usually come from a routine where different products perform different jobs.

But maybe you're not ready for an entire routine.

Maybe you've only recently realised your hair is wavy. Or you've spent years trying products designed for curly or straight hair and simply want one product that lets you see what your natural waves can actually do.

If that's you, we'd start with a lightweight styling foam.

And more specifically, the Merwave Cast Foam.

Why foam is a great first product for wavy hair

One of the biggest challenges with wavy hair is finding enough hold to encourage your natural pattern without pulling it down.

Waves generally have a looser structure than curls. Apply something too rich or heavy and those bends can quickly become stretched, leaving you with flat, greasy or stringy-looking hair.

A lightweight foam sits nicely in the middle.

It can help:

  • Encourage your existing wave pattern
  • Give waves more definition
  • Add lightweight hold
  • Create volume and bounce
  • Reduce the appearance of frizz
  • Keep natural movement rather than leaving hair rigid

And because it's lightweight, it's a particularly approachable place to start if you're still figuring out what your hair needs.

Meet: Merwave Cast Foam

Our Cast Foam was created specifically for naturally wavy hair.

Unlike the heavy mousses and curl products you might have experimented with before, it's designed to give your waves definition and hold without overloading them.

The idea isn't to create waves that aren't there.

It's to give your natural pattern the support it needs to show up.

Apply it to very wet hair, distribute it through your lengths and scrunch upwards.

Then let your hair dry.

If you've spent years brushing, straightening or blow-drying your natural texture away, you might be surprised by what happens.

What does Cast Foam actually do?

Think of Cast Foam as providing structure.

When your hair is wet, water helps individual strands group together into wave clumps.

As your hair dries, those clumps need support if they're going to maintain their shape.

That's where the foam helps.

It helps hold those waves together while they dry, encouraging better definition and reducing the fluffy separation that we commonly call frizz.

You may notice:

  • More obvious S-shaped waves
  • Better definition
  • More volume
  • Less fluffy frizz
  • Waves holding their shape for longer

And because the formula is lightweight, your hair can still move naturally.

Is foam better than mousse for wavy hair?

For many wavies, foam can be a better starting point than a traditional mousse because of its particularly light, airy consistency.

Some mousses can provide strong hold, but depending on the formula, they can also leave fine or loose waves feeling stiff or overloaded.

A lightweight foam is designed to distribute easily through the hair while providing flexible support.

That makes it particularly useful if you've previously found that styling products leave your hair feeling:

  • Crunchy
  • Sticky
  • Heavy
  • Greasy
  • Flat

However, the individual formula matters more than the word on the bottle. Not every mousse is heavy, and not every foam will suit every head of wavy hair.

The important thing is finding a lightweight product that gives your waves the right balance of definition and hold.

Who is Cast Foam best for?

We'd particularly recommend starting with Cast Foam if:

  • You're new to styling your natural waves
  • You aren't sure whether your hair is actually wavy
  • You've found curl creams too heavy
  • Your waves tend to fall flat
  • You struggle with frizz and lack of definition
  • You want more volume and bounce
  • You only want to introduce one new product to your routine

It's an easy way to experiment without completely replacing everything already in your bathroom.

How to use foam on wavy hair

Technique matters almost as much as product.

For the best chance of seeing your natural pattern:

  1. Wash and condition your hair as normal.
  2. Keep your hair very wet after conditioning.
  3. Dispense a small amount of Cast Foam into your hands.
  4. Distribute it evenly through your lengths.
  5. Scrunch upwards towards your scalp to encourage your natural wave pattern.
  6. Gently remove excess water with a microfibre towel or wrap.
  7. Air dry or diffuse your hair without constantly touching it.
  8. Once your hair is completely dry, gently scrunch if necessary.

Start with a relatively small amount.

One of the biggest mistakes people make with wavy hair is assuming more product means more definition. Often, the opposite is true.

Abi’s Tip: "After scrunching, lightly 'pulse' the foam into your waves by squeezing and releasing once or twice; this helps lock in definition"

But is foam really the best product for wavy hair?

There isn't one single product that's best for every person with wavy hair.

But we think foam is a brilliant entry point because it can make an immediate difference to the appearance and hold of your natural pattern without requiring you to completely change your routine.

But styling is only one part of looking after wavy hair.

If your hair is extremely dry, a foam isn't going to replace proper conditioning.

If your hair is covered in product build-up, adding foam isn't going to replace a proper cleanse.

And if you want your waves to remain defined for longer, you may benefit from combining foam with other lightweight styling products.

That's why understanding what each product actually does is so useful.

Why wavy hair responds better to a routine

Try Cast Foam on its own, and you can get a taste of what your natural waves are capable of.

But if you want to take those results further, that's where a complete wavy hair routine comes in.

Think of it like this:

Cleansing gives you a clean base.

Conditioning gives your waves moisture and softness.

Cream encourages definition and hydration.

Foam gives them lightweight structure.

Gel helps everything hold.

No single product has to do every job.

And crucially, the products need to work together without becoming too heavy for your waves.

That's the thinking behind our Wavy Hair Kit. Rather than combining products formulated for different hair types and hoping they play nicely together, you get a complete routine specifically designed around the needs of naturally wavy hair.

New to embracing your wavy hair? Start with foam

If you're standing at the very beginning of your wavy hair journey and only want to try one product, Cast Foam is our recommendation.

It's lightweight, simple to introduce into the routine you already have and gives you the chance to see what happens when your natural texture gets some proper support.

Then see what your hair tells you.

Love the extra definition but need more moisture? Introduce Wave Cream.

Want those waves to last longer? Add Protect Gel.

Ready to stop piecing together your routine and see what all five steps can do together? That's when we'd recommend moving on to the Wavy Hair Kit.

You don't need to overhaul everything on day one.
