Is too much protein bad for your hair?

Protein’s often praised as a hair hero.

Strengthening strands, boosting bounce and reviving limp waves.

But too much of it can hinder wave definition and softness.

Scroll to find out if you have protein overload and how to fix it…

What does protein do?

Around 90% of your hair strands are made up of fibrous proteins, such as keratin.

Daily exposure to heat styling, chemical treatments and UV radiation can degrade keratin.

Causing the cuticle (the outermost layer of the hair shaft) to lift or crack.

This increases porosity and weakens the hair's internal structure.

Protein treatments can help temporarily patch up weakened areas along the hair shaft.

Making strands feel stronger and more resilient.

What is protein overload?

Protein overload happens when the hair receives more protein than it can handle.

Often from repeated use of protein-rich products without enough moisture in between.

Making hair stiff, dry and brittle.

Your waves might lose definition, feel crunchy or snap easily. Especially when wet.

How to fix it

Your hair needs both strength (protein) and softness (moisture).

Tip too far in one direction and your waves will show it.

To fix a protein overload:

  1. Skip out step 3 for a few washes
  2. Add the Wave Cream into your routine to restore moisture
  3. Clarify once a month to remove any buildup
