The do’s & don’ts of brushing wavy hair

Wavy hair is gorgeous. It’s versatile and fun, but it needs special care. Brushing it wrong can cause frizz and damage.
Below are some simple do’s and don’ts for brushing wavy hair…

The Do’s

1. Do use a wide-tooth comb

It’s gentle on wavy hair. Regular brushes can break hair and ruin waves. Start combing from the ends and work your way up to the roots. This prevents tugging and breakage.

2. Do detangle when wet and saturated in conditioner

The conditioner makes your hair super slippery. You want it to feel like seaweed. Your detangling brush will then easily glide through your hair removing knots and tangles.

3. Do finger comb with a light oil

Not only does an oil add shine and moisture, it also helps to tame frizz. Rub a few drops between your hands then gently finger comb through your hair. It’ll keep your waves defined and prevents breakage.

4. Do section your hair

Brushing all your hair at once can cause tangles. So work on small sections instead. It’s easier and less damaging.

The Don’ts

1. Don’t use a regular brush on dry hair

Avoid regular brushes on dry hair. They create frizz and break up the wave pattern. This leads to a poofy look. Instead, use your fingers. Or spritz with water and scrunch to refresh waves.

2. Don’t over-brush

Over-brushing causes frizz and ruins your wave definition. It can pull out the wave shape and pattern. So try and stick to detangling during the wash stage. It’s hard, but try and leave your hair alone throughout the day.

3. Don’t brush roughly

Be gentle with your hair. Rough brushing damaged your cuticles causing breakages. Take your time. Be patient. Treat your hair with care.

4. Don’t skip the right tools

Choose your tools wisely. Avoid fine-tooth combs and brushes with tight bristles. Use a wide-tooth comb and/or detangling brush with flexible bristles. Fingers work too.
