Kelly has always had a lot of hair. Thick. Full. Naturally textured. And for as long as she can remember, she’s loved the look of curls.
So in the 80s, she leaned into it, perms, volume, defined curls. It gave her the shape she wanted.
Without the perm “I found it was that it was hard to get definition; it just looked frizzy. So I loved perming it because it really defined the curls.”
But then perms went out of fashion…
When perms went out of fashion, the routine flipped. Out came the straighteners.
“I spent a very long time straightening it or tying it up.”
“I don’t have much time in my life for most things, so everything has to be quick and easy. So when I did my hair, it was always a case of blasting it dry and dragging straighteners through it.”
“The frizz was frustrating. I always had an umbrella in my bag, no matter what time of year it was. As soon as my hair would get wet, it would just frizz again, and that used to really annoy me.”
“It’s always had that natural wave. If I didn’t dry it, it would have that natural curl, wave and frizz.”
“Being on holiday was a nightmare! I used to go to America sometimes, and my straighteners weren’t compatible, so I couldn’t straighten it. So I used to have bad hair the whole time!”
“When I met Abi! She transformed my view of my hair. That was probably about 3 years ago. It was the way she told me about looking for the signs and understanding how my hair was naturally meant to be.”
“It was nice to realise my hair was actually wavy. I’d wanted it wavy for a while, but I’d do my hair with tongs, and they would just drop really quickly. Then, when I tried the Merwave products, I got an even better look than using an iron… and it stays!”
What was your first experience of using Merwave?
“I was a little bit unsure at first about how it works, as there were so many steps. There’s also a little bit of trial and error. I used the protein one at first, and that didn’t actually work for me.
Then the first time I used it, my hair was a little bit crunchy at first, and I was wondering if I was doing it right. But the next day, I scrunched out the crunch, and I did immediately get really nice waves.”
It’s all about trial and error with your own hair!”
Before: Frizzy
Now: Wavy
Kelly’s advice to you…
“Get the right things! It’s all about finding the right products. Sometimes you need to use a better quality.”
“When you’re younger, you just go into the supermarket and pull something off the shelf, but you need to try to find the one that really works for you.”
Sign 1: Hair's wavy when wet, but dries straight
Hair shows natural waves when wet. Drying disrupts the pattern - leaving puffiness instead of soft, defined waves.
Sign 2: Heat styling never lasts
You curl it, it drops. You straighten it, it bends - your natural wave won’t hold either.
Sign 3: Your ‘frizz’ feels uncontrollable
Not random frizz - your wave pattern separating, not clumping. That’s why smoothing products never really fix it.
Sign 4: Your hair never looks ‘finished’
You wash and dry… but it lacks shape or polish. Never sleek, never defined, always needing more.
Sign 5: Your ends puff or flick out
Flatter at the roots, uneven through the lengths. Ends flick, curl, or puff depending on humidity.
Straightening, brushing and everyday drying break apart your natural wave pattern.
So instead of waves... you see frizz.
The fix? A simple 15-minute routine using lightweight products designed for waves.
The Merwave Wavy Hair Kit works with your natural pattern, transforming frizz into soft, defined, beach waves.
