I've spent years trying to master the perfect wavy hair. Yet for years I just couldn't get it right. I ended up with a frizzy, dull mess. Damaged split ends. Spent a fortune on products that didn't work.

Eventually I cracked it.

Now, my hair is long, soft and shiny. I've got beach worthy waves all year round. The hair you get after swimming in the sea. The kinda hair that puts a smile on your face every time you look in the mirror.

In this article you'll discover the 6 game changing tips that allowed me to embrace my natural waves. Tips you can implement immediately.

Let's get into it...

1. Use a good quality, silicon free shampoo

Most people don’t realise the number of harmful ingredients that are in standard shampoos. Silicones are man-made polymers that create the feeling of silky soft hair but in fact, cause dryness and block beneficial ingredients from penetrating your hair.

Going natural is always best for curly and wavy hair. A silicone-free shampoo will clarify your scalp without leaving it feeling stripped, plus the formula will not cling to the outside of your hair which means your styling products will be more effective. It’s a win-win!

To restore your natural oils without weighing down your natural waves, the Merwave Cleanse shampoo is my go-to.

2. Tangles and frizz are caused by a lack of moisture

As a wavy girl, moisture should be your best friend. Your hair needs tons of it to thrive. Poor hydration can be the cause of many problems but injecting more moisture into your hair is a simple fix.

I use bucket loads of Merwave Repair conditioner when washing mine to ensure it stays deeply hydrated. It contains glycerin and jojoba oil which is an amazing blend that deeply nourishes wavy hair.

Another cause of frizz may be that you’re simply not applying your styling products evenly. I’ve found that having very wet hair when applying styling products can help for absorption and you can try brushing the products through. The plopping method is also a great technique to use on soaking wet hair.

3. Seal your moisture in using a mask conditioner

Are you sealing in your hair’s moisture? Moisture retention is so important when it comes to caring for your natural waves and enhancing its definition. Most people fail to seal their moisture in which means it quickly becomes dehydrated causing frizz and tangles.

By using a good quality leave-in conditioner like Merwave’s Feed treatment, or high-quality natural oils, you can feed your hair with the nutrients it needs to stay moist. When your wavy hair is fully hydrated you’ll notice a big difference in how it looks, behaves and feels!

However, try to avoid butter and heavy oils. They can cause product build-up on the hair and weigh it down.

Keep the products light and the gels strong!

The next tip was the game changer...

4. Use silk accessories

This is where most wavy hair women go wrong. Cotton bedsheets and pillow cases can cause havoc with your hair. Not only do they absorb your hairs natural moisture and oils (which is needed to unleash incredible waves), they also cause friction which means our waves don't stay in shape for as long.

As soon as I started using silk pillowcases, scrunchies and hairbands my life changed!

My hair stays hydrated for longer, is stronger and less brittle. The silk locks in the hydration that's been fed from my Merwave mask and ensures my waves retain their definition and shape for longer.

Satin and silk rule number one when it comes to choosing wavy girl accessories!

5. Change your hair brush

There is often some confusion as to whether you should or shouldn’t brush wavy hair. If using a brush works for you then great, but choose the right one!

Use a gentle brush such as a Denman, ikoo or Tangle Teezer, as these are best for curls and waves. These brushes use a combination of long and short flexible teeth to glide through hair easily, so unnecessary tugging or pulling.

You should also brush your hair when wet instead of dry as this will limit damage and reduce the amount of hair loss when detangling.

And the last tip is...

6. Use a diffuser

A diffuser won’t magically make straight hair curl. But, along with a good Cast Foam and Protect Gelit will definitely help your waves hold their shape whilst they dry.

The diffuser disperses the air to reduce frizz and keep from disrupting the natural wave pattern. It’s a great tool for enhancing curls and natural waves especially if you’re in a hurry as we all know how long thick hair can take to dry!

Just be mindful of how hot the hairdryer is and always use a heat protector. Using a cool setting can still achieve great results with great definition.

Simple routine for thick wavy hair!

I have long hair with a loose curl/ tight wave to it.Each strand is thin but I've absolutely loads of it, giving me a thick head of frizz if I'm not careful. It has taken 3 washes (once a week) to fine tune our new routine with the merwave products and get exactly the results I wanted! I've 3 kids and a dog, so my time is at a premium, but washing is quick and easy. My waves / curls last the full week and can be easily refreshed with water. No frizz, and my hair feels really soft and hydrated. I'm so impressed!. Just need refillable bottles now to cut down on plastic waste...

Daughter finally likes curly hair!

Having tried a few different things, my 11year old daughters curly hair just ends up a frizzy mess and she constants wishes for straight hair. Not anymore! We’ve used the Mousse (4) and Gel (5) and have cracked the right amounts now and get hair like lovely for a few days even after sleeping on it only needs a quick refresh. Planning on trying more Merwave products soon. Would definitely recommend these products!

Yes….I have wavy hair!

Very pleased with the products, overall hair is in better condition and needs much less maintenance. Took a while to transition, hair looked dry and birds nesty but worth the wait as my hair eventually relaxed. Just need to balance with a colour shampoo to look after my highlights.

Great products

My sister had been encouraging me to try these for ages, I finally did and am very glad I did. I’ve had lots of nice comments about my hair since using and more importantly have noticed a difference myself. The products really encourage the natural waves and don’t weigh down the hair. I have very thin hair which I would have described as curly until my early 30s but since then have struggled with what it is as the curl has dropped a lot and it has got thinner. These products have revitalised my hair.
