Does your hair need moisture or protein?

What’s your hair asking for…

If your waves suddenly feel frizzier than usual, harder to style, or just not like your waves, usually, it’s not actually your routine.

Wavy hair needs the right mix of moisture and protein to stay soft, defined, and resilient. When that balance tips too far in one direction, your hair usually lets you know.

What’s the difference?

Moisture keeps your hair soft, flexible, and smooth.

Protein gives your hair structure, strength, and the ability to hold its shape.

Moisture = softness.

Protein = support.

Wavy hair needs both, but not too much of either. It can be a bit dramatic, we know.

The quick test: Moisture or protein?

The strand stretch test is the quickest way to get a read on what your hair needs.

Take a single wet strand and gently stretch it:

  • Snaps quickly with little stretch: Your hair likely needs moisture
  • Stretches a lot but doesn't bounce back: Your hair likely needs protein
  • Stretches a little, then returns to shape: Your balance is probably good

It's not a perfect science, but it gives you a useful starting point before you start adjusting anything in your routine.

Signs your hair needs moisture

If your hair is lacking moisture, it often feels:

  • Dry or rough to the touch
  • Frizzy, especially after styling
  • Dull rather than shiny
  • Hard to detangle
  • More prone to snapping when brushed

Waves might look a little undefined or fluffy, rather than soft and clumped together.

This usually happens when hair loses hydration faster than it can hold onto it. Which is something wavy hair is prone to struggling with.

Signs your hair needs protein

Protein is about strength and structure. When your hair needs it, you might notice:

  • Waves dropping quickly after styling
  • Hair feeling overly soft or “too silky”
  • Lack of definition, even when moisturised
  • Strands stretching a lot when wet, then not bouncing back
  • Hair feeling weaker or more prone to breakage

This can happen after heat styling, chemical treatments, or just general wear over time.

What happens when you get too much of either?

As with most things, balance is everything.

Too much moisture can leave hair feeling limp, overly soft, and unable to hold its wave pattern.

Too much protein can make hair feel stiff, dry, and more prone to breakage.

If your hair feels like it’s suddenly gone in the opposite direction, it might be reacting to too much of one side.

A simple way to think about it

Most wavies need more moisture most of the time, with occasional protein to keep hair strong.

That being said, your hair will change with:

  • Weather
  • Washing frequency
  • Styling habits
  • Lifestyle changes

So what works one month might need a small tweak the next.
